| Course description |
Faces convey information about personal identity, emotional state, speech and direction of attention. Human infants appear to come into the world ready to pay attention to faces and monkeys have specialised brain cells which respond specifically to faces. Brain injury occasionally produces perceptual and cognitive deficits which are specific to faces. In this option we will discuss some of the current research in cognitive psychology, developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience which has helped us to develop a clearer understanding of the processes which are involved in the perception and recognition of faces. We will also consider how this knowledge may be relevant to solving applied problems of criminal identification.
A selection of the following topics will be discussed: Expression perception; lipreading; gaze perception; cognitive neuroscience of face perception; models of face perception and person identification; memory for unfamiliar faces and eyewitness testimony; development of face processing. |
