Course description This dissertation of around, and not exceeding, 15,000 words forms the final element of the Masters Degree in Educational Research, Policy and Practice. The Masters Degree in Educational Research, Policy and Practice is an exit award associated with the Doctorate of Education (EdD).
The dissertation is a major study that demands a high level of individual application and commitment to research and enquiry. It provides students with the opportunity to identify, reflect on and explore a relevant topic in education $ú a topic that may have implications for their own professional practice. This dissertation may take the form of a piece of empirical research, or an analytical literature review or a philosophical enquiry.
The exact form and design of the study should be decided by students in discussion with their supervisors.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Successful completion of the dissertation will allow students to demonstrate the capacities to:

delineate an appropriate topic of enquiry, justifying its theoretical significance, professional relevance and practical feasibility

identify relevant literature and engage with this literature in an analytical manner

where appropriate, competently design and conduct a research study, justifying the approaches and techniques used and being alert to questions concerning validity

examine critically the contributions and limitations of the study

where appropriate, demonstrate that the study complies with relevant ethical guidelines

present a coherent account, which observes appropriate academic conventions in relation to style, tone, structuring of the text, proof-reading and referencing
