Course description This course unit explores the channels and forms through which the fruits of educational research and scholarship are discussed and disseminated to a variety of stakeholders. One key concern is therefore with what might count as 'evidence', 'data' or 'substantiation' for a given claim (a theory, concept, insight or observation) in academic, professional ad public domains, and with how appropriate it might be to apply a particular finding or insight to policies or practices beyond the settings within which the research took place. A linked concern is with the requirements and conventions of different 'genres' in education, in the light of their intended audiences and communicative purposes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course unit, students will be able to:

approach their reading of the educational literatures within and beyond the EdD programme in a more reflectively alert and scholarly adept way

demonstrate a critical awareness of the range of genres to be found in the educational publications, and of the intended audiences and conventions associated with these

adopt an appropriately questioning approach to supporting evidence (qualitative and quantitative) and to the appropriate deployment of methodologies for gathering and interpreting data

display an enhanced grasp of the complex interrelations between scholarly and professional perspectives, practices and policies
Assessment Information
Students will undertake an assignment of 4,000-5,000 words, presenting a critique of a significant educational publication of their choosing (e.g. an article in a refereed journal). The critique will pay particular attention to locating the publication within its relevant genre(s), having regard to its main communicative purposes and intended audience(s), while also critically evaluating how the publication seeks to 'warrant' and provide evidential substantiation for the claims made.
