Course description The course will explore historical processes of Islamisation in mainly sub-Saharan Africa (West, East, Sothern) and contemporary issues of African Islamic identity that illustrate processes of Africanisation of Islam. Attention will be given to Islamic engagement with African indigenous religion, and with African Christianity. Lectures will be accompanied by a weekly seminar with prescribed readings of works by classical and modern African Muslim writers.

Pre-requisites Visiting students should have at least 3 Divinity/Religious Studies courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
As a result of satisfactory completion of the course, students will understand the historic processes of Islamisation in Africa, will appreciate the cultural and religious characteristics of African Islam, will understand ways in which African Islam engages religious pluralism in Africa, and will be familiar with English translations of selected African Muslim writers on Islam.
Assessment Information
10% Seminar participation, 30% essay, 60% Exam.
