This course explores key themes in the theology of Friedrich Schleiermacher, engaging critically with his work and reflecting carefully on aspects of its critical reception and contemporary adequacy. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, a student will have:
(1) understood the key dimensions of the theological work of Schleiermacher $ú its intellectual context, underlying concerns, and material content;
(2) engaged critically with Schleiermacher&©s theological work both by way of close reading of primary texts and by judicious use of secondary literature;
(3) written an essay on an aspect of Schleiermacher&©s theological work studied in the course, engaging with both primary and relevant secondary literature;
(4) presented in the seminar and participated in constructive discussion and debate with other seminar members in a respectful manner;
(5) considered the positive and negative implications of the theology of Schleiermacher for contemporary constructive work in systematic theology. |
Assessment Information
The assessment will be based on:
10% - seminar presentation;
10% - seminar participation;
30% - essay of 2,000 words;
50% - degree examination. |
