| Course description |
This is a research-based dissertation whose aim is to make an examination of a limited subject (or an aspect of a wider subject) not hitherto tackled by historians, or perhaps to review an existing interpretation of a subject in light of new sources, new theories or new statistical approaches. The original content of the dissertation is normally explored within the context of existing studies of the subject. The dissertation should be 10000 to 14000 words in length and the programme of research and writing will be done under the supervision of a pre-arranged member of staff.Students also submit a research proposal as part of their dissertation preparation. |

A pass in 40 credits of third level historical courses or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the dissertation the student should have achieved the following -
* an ability to formulate an hypothesis suitable for further research
* a familiarity with the processes of historical research using original documents or data
* an ability to analyse historical materials in the context of a wider secondary literature
* the presentation of original historical research in the form of a written output (the dissertation) illustrated where appropriate with statistical, literary or visual evidence.
* management of a personal research and writing timetable
* co-ordination of the research and writing process to take account of the supervisor input |
Assessment Information
One research proposal of 1000-1500 words to be submitted at the end of teaching block 1 of semester 1 (5%)
One written dissertation of 10000-14000 words to be submitted at the end of semester 2 (95%)
The total word count of the Research Proposal and dissertation should not be more than 15000 words.
There is no examination. |
