Course description Language 2 aims to develop student awareness of the nature and complexity of language and literacy development in young children. The roles of the learner, parents, teachers and peers in the child's development are explored. Language 2 therefore focuses upon literacy development in the home, pre school education and the early years' stages of primary school. Curriculum Framework 3-5 and English Language 5-14 provide the basis for curricular aspects. Building on knowledge and understanding gained in Language 1, there is a continuing focus on supporting students in the development of their own subject and pedagogical knowledge. Effective learning and teaching of oracy, reading and writing are each explored, in relation to underpinning theories and to relevant research. Explicit links are made with formative assessment, early intervention, thinking skills, supporting children with difficulties, ICT and modern languages in the primary school.
