Course description History of Art 1 examines the visual arts from 300-1700. The first semester (History of Art 1A:'Tradition and Innovation: The Visual Arts from 300-1300') focuses upon European and Islamic material culture from the time of Constantine, the 4th century, to the days of Giotto, the 14th century. Lectures include geographical areas ranging from Rome and Ireland to Baghdad and the borders of China. Classes at the end of the semester consider the methods and concepts especially relevant to this material. Semester 2 (History of Art 1B:'Rebirth and Reform: The Visual Arts in Europe, 1300-1700') focuses on European material culture - from the illuminated manuscripts of the Limbourg brothers, to the sculptures of Michelangelo or the paintings of Rubens - and examines the relationship between society and the arts in a period of religious, political and social ferment. Classes at the end of the semester consider the methods and concepts especially relevant to this material. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF VISITING STUDENTS STUDENTS MUST TAKE BOTH SEMESTERS OF THIS COURSE.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
History of Art 1 consists of two semester units but each semester unit is also designed so that it can be taken as an independent course for visiting students who are in Edinburgh for only one semester. Students who take this course come with very different levels of knowledge of art history. Our intention is that by the end all will have acquired an understanding of the important issues raised by the subject and of the methods used to deal with them; they will also have a command of the basic concepts and vocabulary of the discipline. In the lecture units and seminar courses students will learn the methods of art history through the study of the work of selected artists, types of objects, and periods of art. Emphasis will be placed on the critical analysis and interpretation of visual and historical materials, both in the lectures and in seminars. Seminars will make use of material in museums and galleries in Edinburgh. Essay writing and making verbal contributions in class will develop the students' communication skills.
Assessment Information
One Essay per semester (30%), presentation and contribution to seminars(20%) and a three-hour degree examination in the May diet (50%).
