Course description The course involves studying the ways in which works of art are interpreted by the manner of their display in galleries and museums, both through the hang of permanent collections and the curating of exhibitions. Edinburgh provides an exemplary model of the different types of institution that make up the modern art world. Students will have the opportunity to study major national museums (such as the National Galleries of Scotland, and the Royal Museum of Scotland); publicly funded galleries such as the Fruitmarket Gallery, the City Art Centre and the University?s own Talbot-Rice gallery; and commercial galleries such as Doggerfisher and the Ingleby Gallery. Weekly on-site seminars analyse the practical needs and conceptual assumptions underlying the display of art from several periods and cultures, and in varied media, within particular architectural spaces. Contributions by staff in History of Art will be reinforced by discussions with e.g. museum professionals and artists.
