Course description The course aims to consider the significance of the frontier as a concept and a reality in the historical development of the United States from 1763 until the closing of the frontier in 1890. Additionally the course aims to consider the interaction among people on the frontier, the interaction between people and the environment, and the impact of the frontier on American culture. The course will also consider such themes as fur trading, mining, cattle ranching, farming, overland migration, conflict, and community formation on the frontier.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A pass or passes in 40 credits of first level historical courses or equivalent and a pass or passes in 40 credits of second level historical courses or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Honours students who complete this course should be able to engage in historiographical debates both orally and in writing. They should gain greater awareness of the nature and use of historical evidence; engage historical arguments by focusing on debates by historians about key issues; increase their skills in research, writing and presentation; and improve their critical skills through oral communication.

One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one two-hour examination paper (two-thirds of overall assessment).
