Course description The fourteenth century was a period of profound social upheaval: first famine, then the Black Death and successive plagues; periodic peasant rebellions; the deposition of two kings; the Hundred Years War with France, and the rise of England's first popular heresy, Lollardy. This course seeks to better understand the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 by situating it in its broader social, economic, political and religious contexts. Additionally, it looks at how various contemporary writers interpreted the events of 1381, from well-known writers such as Chaucer, Langland and Gower, to the often anonymous chroniclers.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements A pass or passes in 40 credits of first level historical courses or equivalent and a pass or passes in 40 credits of second level historical courses or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course the student will have knowledge of key aspects of social, economic, political and religious changes in fourteenth-century England and be able to evaluate the different factors which contributed to the outbreak of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The student will also have improved awareness of the nature and use of historical evidence and of the nature of history as argument. The student will be able to exercise critical judgement and convey findings in writing and orally and carry out assigned tasks in a group context.
Assessment Information
One essay of about 3000 words (one third of overall assessment); one two-hour examination paper (two-thirds of overall assessment).
