Pre-requisites |
Visiting students should only take this course if they have an equivalent background to what is covered in the first semester of the course ( English Language VS1). This must include the study of the basics of phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax (either as part of a linguistics course or as a course on the structure of the English Language) |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. The course will give students an introduction to variation (both geographical and social) in English today.
2. The course will give students an overview of how English and Scots have developed from the earliest records until the present day, especially in relation to external historical developments and language contact. |
