Course description This course provides students with an intensive overview of aspects of intellectual property ('IP') law. It considers patents, copyright, trade marks, passing off, designs, trade secrets, IP and the internet, European and international aspects, IP litigation and corporate and commercial matters.

Aims and objectives

This course aims to:
provide a rigorous introduction to the basic principles of IP law;
consider the challenges posed by technology to established principles of IP law, and how IP law has responded;
to provide a strong theoretical basis for working with IP in business;

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you should be able to:

readily identify the basic principles underpinning each IP right;
critically evaluate the extent to which existing case law and legislation is clear;
assess whether the law adequately meets the challenges of new technologies, innovation and business and how legislatures and courts might respond;and
reflect critically on the application and operation of the law in legal practice in contentious and non contentious matters
