Course description The study of a series of set works from the 12th to the 20th centuries covering historical and cultural contexts, analytical approaches and issues of performance.
Entry Requirements
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: ( Music 1A: Music in Social Contexts (MUSI08011) OR Music 1B: Music and Technologies (MUSI08012) OR Set Works 1 (MUSI08027)) AND Music 1C: Musical Literacy (MUSI08013)
Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Music 1C: Musical Literacy is not required when Higher or A-Level (or equivalent) in Music is held.

Pre-requisites Visiting students should have at least two semesters of Music History and Music Theory. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- gain an understanding of the work of some of the major composers of the past;
- learn to relate musical works to broader contexts of society, of technologies and of the history of ideas;
- address issues of transmission, representation, cultural norms and performance practice.

An essay c.2,000 words (40%) and a degree examination (60%).
