Course description This course aims to equip the student with a variety of skills useful to a professional undertaking, communicating and/or managing research. These include computing, programming, writing and presenting skills. The course also covers the definition, planning and running of a research project.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Write simple programs to plot and display data, to produce publication-quality graphs and include them in a written document or web page.
2. Plan, draft and polish scientific papers and reports, which are clearly written and well-structured.
3. Prepare and deliver a talk on a scientific subject.
4. Select, define and plan the execution of a research project, and prepare a coherent and convincing research proposal.

The student will pursue outcome 4 in the context of defining and getting approval of the research they intend to undertake for their Masters dissertation.
