Course description |
The course aims to equip the student with a variety of skills useful to the professional research scientist or GIS professional. These include writing, presenting, organising, managing and conducting field work. The course introduces the GIS dissertation and leads into the annual MSc conference, where students contribute talks on their chosen field of research.
This course comprises the following activities:
- a weekend field course in which students will undertake field based GIS projects. This is supported by field technique tutorials in which students will learn about GIS data capture using surveying and GPS methods.
- a series of seminars from national mapping agencies, politicians, consultancies, research laboratories and researchers associated with the field of geographic information.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should have achieved and demonstrated:
- Acquisition and application of a set of problem solving skills to design, manage and execute small scale, team based projects;
- Search, read, assess the quality of, and summarise relevant literature from a variety of sources in support of understanding, and formalisation of argument;
- Utilise, and understand the importance of, a set of transferable skills common to any task, specifically: time management, and the communication of ideas using various media (oral, graphical, written);
- An ability to use a variety of field based techniques and equipment concerned with the capture of geospatial information, including the management and presentation of geospatial data
- Understand business and career opportunities in the field of GI (both research and industrial), understanding the ethos of each;
- To utilise all of these skills in the preparation, design and execution of the dissertation project;
- To understand the context of current debates and thinking in GI through participation in a dedicated seminar series;
