Course description This course is designed to provide historical context for contemporary issues in Scottish politics society and the economy. Students will have an opportunity to study the historical background to devolution, demographic changes, issues such as housing and the land question as well as more general questions of Scottish national identity and the place of Scotland in the United Kingdom as we mark 300 hundred years of Anglo-Scottish union. This is an area where there is a rapidly developing literature and exciting opportunities for research projects utilising Edinburgh's unrivalled library and archival resources.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Through completion of the course students will have gained knowledge and understanding of the this period of Scottish history and will have had some experience of the following skills: critical reading of primary and secondary sources; completion of independent research leading to seminar presentation and submission of written work to a required standard; participation in group seminar work and an appreciation of the responsibility to other members of the group.
