| Course description |
Students will be required to undertake two supervised internships (one in each semester) in order to provide a practical introduction to the collections and the management of resources and collections, and the ways that they can be used for research. The students will work on a small research project, which will be supervised by both academic and archival and curatorial staff. The project will be chosen to reflect the interests, and ability, of the students and the needs and restrictions of the archival repository. Students may find it useful to maintain a record of their work - for example a visual diary using photographs - that can then be used in their reports in order to demonstrate the practical aspects of their projects. |

There are no scheduled hours but students are expected to spend the equivalent of 12 hours (one and half days) work per week on each of the internships (one in each semester). The hours worked will be arranged in consultation with the archival staff. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Students will be given an insight into the collection and management of various types of archival material. They will develop skills in using collections and archives for research and also to identify further possibilities for producing research projects based on the material contained in the collections. They will be required to present their material in a clear and appropriate format. |
Assessment Information
| Students will complete the supervised practical archival projects and submit a written report on their work for each of the two internships, which will be assessed. The report will normally be 3000 words in length, excluding appendices, bibliography and footnotes. It will discuss the aims and objectives of the project. This should include a description of the sources and methodology that were used and an assessment of the overall project. |
