Course description The aims of this course are to investigate at an advanced level the choral lyric poems of Bacchylides and to explore the relation of these poems to their social, historical, and literary contexts.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
-write well-researched, well-argued and relevant critical essays on specific aspects of Bacchylidean poetry
-demonstrate in written work and in class an informed understanding of the literary, historical, and cultural issues raised by the study of Bacchylides
-demonstrate in written work and in class a detailed understanding of the most significant contemporary interpretations of Bacchylides
