| Course description |
Students will write an assignment of 3,000 words presenting either a preliminary report on the proposed dissertation, or a free-standing essay addressing a historical topic which needs to be understood in more detail in preparation for the dissertation. It should use both primary and secondary sources. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire:
- A specialised knowledge and understanding of their chosen area of history;
- An understanding of the interaction between historical sources and explanation;
- The ability to formulate a plan of research;
- The ability to formulate and test hypotheses. |
