Course description Archaeogenetics is a topical and burgeoning field in archaeological investigation. It involves the study of ancient and modern DNA samples to deduce past human evolution and activity. The Archaeogenetics course provides an overview of molecular biology and genetics, associated laboratory techniques and analytical methods and how these are applied to archaeological research. Consideration is also given to the practical problems of ancient DNA recovery and the theoretical problems associated with the interpretation of Palaeogenetic data.
An introduction to the historical development of the discipline is presented with reference to the role of archaeogenetics in understanding human evolution and the innovation and spread of agriculture. This is expanded upon with a wider consideration of the application of archaeogenetics to questions of ?acculturation? and ?population movement? models of culture change, which have pervaded archaeological thought for the past 150 years.
