| Course description |
The course will introduce and demonstrate the importance of the routine inclusion of earth sciences methods within the framework of archaeological research. The material and examples will come mainly from ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Babylonian and Persian cultures. The majority will be taken from 1000 BC to the late Roman period, with other examples from prehistoric cultures. Throughout the course, the practical archaeological benefits of incorporation of course content within archaeological research will be emphasised through examples. The course material will be fully expressed within ancient contexts, e.g. historical, economic, and intellectual. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course students will have acquired a knowledge and understanding of:
- how earth sciences and its attendant methods and techniques can be incorporated seamlessly into archaeological research;
- the fundamentals of the classification, description and characterisation of geological raw materials in their native state, and within completed artefacts;
- the instrumental techniques available.
