Course description |
This course aims to equip students with an understanding of key concepts fundamental to African Studies. The course is organised thematically, drawing on key texts to interrogate concepts necessary for an advanced postgraduate and research in African Studies. Ten themes will be explored during the course, including themes such as ethnicity, race, post-colonialism and urbanisation. Readings will, where appropriate, focus on one or two key texts and supplementary materials. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Assess a range of theoretical arguments, perspectives and approaches
2. Draw upon, distil and synthesise using a variety of source materials to construct academic arguments
3. Identify and utilise appropriate theories and concepts in order to assess given historical, contemporary and policy debates surrounding Africa and African Studies
Particular skills developed will include:
1. Undertaking and presenting scholarly work
2. Participating in group discussion
3. Making appropriate use of library and IT resources
