| Course description |
This course will examine some of the ways in which people in different societies conceptualize and live out relatedness. It will show how notions about relatedness are linked to concepts of the person, gender, marriage, and theories of procreation, which may be radically different in different kinds of society and social context. It will look at the transmission of kinship knowledge down the generations, taking in the theme of memory and secrets, and ideas of home and emplacement. Kinship has long been regarded as the core of the anthropological discipline - although the extent to which this is still the case is questionable. |
