Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course is organised in two sections. The first aims to provide an understanding of why welfare states emerged in Europe; the implications for social provision of the different ways in which services are organised and financed; and the challenges posed by globalisation for the welfare state and how different countries are responding to these. Focusing on the 'social dimension' of the European Union and the problems facing attempts to promote common social policies across its member states, the second section seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of particular initiatives in the social sphere and to consider the likely future of social policy in an enlarged EU.
