| Course description |
This course is in three parts, each focusing on the issue of $ùwhat develops&© and (in the third part) $ùwhat declines&© during the human lifespan. The first part concentrates on the foundations of perception, cognition and language in the first four years of life, in particular the growing abilities of children to control their physical and social environments The second part focuses on the role of language in relation to social cognition and in particular the contrast between theories that emphasise social pragmatic versus linguistic constraint-based factors in semantic and syntactic development of children. The interplay amongst linguistic, cognitive and social aspects of development is also explored in relation to research on theory of mind. Finally, the course continues with issues that are central to knowledge, semantics and social cognition, such as information processing and episodic and working memory $ú both from the standpoint of their growth and, in particular, their decline during ageing. |

&·To understand the role of physical activity in contributing to cognitive development and cognitive control
&·To know how speech and language emerge in the first years of life

&·To understand how grammatical development is influenced by semantics and the understanding of communicative intent.
&·To know how normal ageing affects general cognitive mechanisms such as processing speed as well as its specific effects on memory
&·To understand the decline in cognition in terms of working and episodic memory and the executive functions that develop during childhood
