| Course description |
The course seeks to examine, from an ethnological stance, the presentation and consumption of Scottish cultural tradition through an exploration of heritage as both concept and industry. Using a number of thematic case studies, students will be encouraged to critically deconstruct the term 'heritage' and consider its role in the creation and maintenance of local and national identities. A visit to one heritage organisation will be included. |

Visiting students must have a background in Folklore or Anthropology (ideally at least 3 relevant courses at grade B or above). We will only consider University/College level courses for entry purposes. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| By the end of the course students should have: Engaged with scholarly literature relating to the concept of heritage; Gained an empirical familiarity with the historical development of the heritage industry within Scotland; Developed a critical awareness of the aims, objectives and practices of the key institutions within the Scottish heritage industry; Enhanced ethnological research skills through focused engagement with both exhibition- and web-based materials; Participated in group discussions and debates aimed at the critical deconstruction of the heritage concept; Consolidated skills developed in pre-Honours years relating to the writing of critical texts on ethnological issues and problems through course work tasks. |
Assessment Information
| Course work (totalling 50% of final mark) One 2000 word essay, week 8, 20% of final mark; one 1500 word review, week 10, 20% of final mark; one tutorial presentation assessment, 10% of final mark; Degree exam (50% of final mark) One exam of one-and-a half hours' duration. |
