Course descriptionIndicative course content
This module examines contemporary art since the end of the 1970s. Relations between critical, promotional and reactionary reconfigurations of postmodernism will be considered by looking at a diverse range of culturally thematic and process-based practices. The conflicting critical and methodological discourses which negotiated such practices will be examined in the context of the contentious international debates regarding the genesis and meaning of postmodernism and globalism.

Aims of course
1 To undertake a systematic and wide-ranging analysis of the principal practices and discourses of contemporary art.
2 To explore those practices and discourses within the context of broader cultural, institutional, political and economic shifts within global culture and society since the late '70s.
3 To interrogate some of the major critical interpretations of art and their theoretical bases produced since the late 70s.
