Course descriptionDuring the requisite period of time spent at a university in Japan, students will undertake preparatory work for the dissertation. A general topic, in an area of Japanese History, Society or Culture, should be approved by the Convener for Japanese by the beginning of the student's third year. Preparatory work will normally include the following elements: 1) Reading in English and Japanese on the general topic identified 2) Identifying a specific research question and planning how to address it 3) Collecting and assimilating research materials and conducting fieldwork 4) Regular contact with a member of staff in Japanese Studies at Edinburgh. Students are required to submit the following by the last day of the third year of study: 1) An introductory section of about 2000 words 2) A detailed dissertation plan 3) A bibliography

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to develop students' ability in the following areas:
1) Independent study
2) Synthesis of material from different sources, including those in Japanese
3) Identifying a research topic and planning the research

All components will be formative, non-summative assessment.

The completed dissertation submitted in year 4 (see Japanese 4 dissertation: completion) will be the basis for the summative assessment of credits taken in years and 3 and 4.
