Course descriptionBuilding on the knowledge of Japanese culture acquired during the year abroad and/or through other extensive research, students will prepare a 2,500 word essay on a subject approved by the convener for Japanese or nominated tutor. Although regular guidance by the nominated tutor is accommodated for as an integral part of this study, students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of independence in their approach.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to develop the student's abilities in the following areas:
1) Independent study
2) Synthesis and analysis of materials from different sources, normally including materials in Japanese
3) Formal academic writing
These skills are intended to equip students who have completed the course to communicate their knowledge of Japanese culture effectively to others.
