Course descriptionThe course focuses on the issues raised by historical events and processes in modern Japan, from the mid-19th century to the present day. A thematic approach is adopted and topics pertinent to the history and culture of modern Japan will be examined. Where appropriate, the pre-modern background will be examined.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Japanese Language Programme and Study Abroad 3 (Single) (ASST10069) OR Japanese Language Programme and Study Abroad 3 (Combined) (ASST10070)

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Successful completion of a second- or third-year level course in Japanese history.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to deepen students' understanding of issues in Japanese history and to develop their skills in the use of library resources (both conventional and electronic), the collating and synthesis of materials, oral presentation, discussion on prescribed themes, and academic writing.
Assessment Information
Presentation on an approved topic; one essay (3,500 words); one two-hour summative examination in the May Diet.
