Course descriptionA treatment of the physiology, structure, development and reproduction of higher plants and fungi. How plants perceive environmental cues. Aspects of plant biochemistry, cell-cell signalling, sexual reproduction and biotechnology that are relevant to the improvement of crop plants. Exploitation of plant biomass. Mutualistic and parasitic plant-microbe interaction, including disease and its resistance, nitrogen fixation, mycorrhizae and lichens. Students considering further plant science courses are invited to attend a 1-week field course at the end of the summer term.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Origin and Diversity of Life 1 (BILG08001) AND Molecules and Cells 1 (BILG08002)

Assessment Information
1 x 1200 word essay, practical reports. Coursework = 30%, degree examination = 70%. Exemption for 40% in practical reports AND essay AND class examination AND short-answer questions AND 50% in multiple-choice question test AND 50% overall average.
