Course descriptionAn introduction to the chief characteristics and institutions of British employment relations (managers, unions and the State) set in the context of change in the economy and labour market. Consideration of human resource management developments in the fields of recruitment and retention, training and development, appraisal, and the management of reward and performance. Examination of other topical and controversial employment issues including the European Union, employment law and equal opportunities.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Business Studies 1 (BUST08001) OR ( Industrial Management 1 (BUST08002) AND Techniques of Management (MAEE08002))

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students should:
(a) have acquired secure knowledge and understanding of the chief characteristics and institions of Britain's system of employment relations;
(b) be able to discuss critically current managerial and public policy approaches towards key employment matters;
(c) have acquired insight into the practical and conceptual significance of change process currently affecting employment relations in Britian and overseas.
