Course descriptionThis course is concerned with understanding how companies in the research-based industries (for example software, biotechnology, chemicals, electronics and advanced services) go about product innovation. It is a business-oriented course, continually referencing practical examples and includes a speaker from a hi-tech start-up.

There is a lot of skill development on the course including the use of online learning (Wikis, blogs and an e-portfolio) and detailed tuition on preparing an essay and project report.

* the economic significance and general nature of innovation

* innovation process in the R&D-based industries, including frequent references to raising and using venture capital

* practical problems surrounding the management of innovation, such as issues in the management of R&D, design, technology transfer and technological collaboration

* issues of public and private policy

The tutor supplies reading materials, other material relating to particular industries, countries and technologies is available from the library, web and course website

appreciate product innovation processes in selected emergent sectors

link product innovation processes to a range of organisational and social issues
Assessment Information
20% blog discussion, 30% wiki essay - theory and literature, 50% individual/ group e-portfolio project report.
