Course descriptionThis project is intended to focus students on holistic design of geotechnical temporary works against time and cost constraints. The project should develop creative thinking as well as team skills. Detailed and iterative calculation abilities will be observed.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course is intended to:
- encourage questioning and creative thinking
- develop skills in problem identification and solution development
- provide a realistic team working environment
- develop skills of completing work on time and target.
By the end of the project the student should have:
- improved design skills
- improved communication skills
- a better appreciation of project planning issues
- an appetite for innovative engineering and planning.
Assessment Information
The assessment will be based on the submitted reports and on the project presentation. The allocation of marks will be as follows:
LETTER 10%
INTERIM CALCULATIONS 20%
FEASIBILITY REPORT 70%

Syllabus The course is project based over Weeks 1 and 2 of the 2nd Semester of MEng Year 4. There are no formal scheduled lectures. The course commences with a briefing session at the start of the first week.

Project Brief:
The project brief will be issued at the start of the first week.
Deliverables by Students:
The project will operate to a tight time schedule. The following deliverables are to be produced:
1. A letter to the Client at the end of Day 1: 1-2 Pages long.
2. A final report by 16.45 on Day 10:
Submissions will NOT be individual $ú a submission will be made on behalf of the Group of 4-5 students. The Group will be required to comment on the percentage contributions of each member.

The final report, for each group, will take the form of a technical report, and should not exceed 20 pages (including diagrams, figures and tables). It should include an executive summary that does not exceed 5 pages. The report must outline the project brief, the planning problem and constraints, identify alternative solutions and undertake analyses as directed, cost alternative solutions, present financial and economic analysis, present sustainability assessments for the alternative solutions, present an evaluation of all alternatives and make recommendations for a preferred scheme. Students are expected to undertake detailed and iterative calculations. Some shareware software may found on the Durham University Geology web site. If you write your own software in Excel or Matlab, then the source code must be included on a CD-Rom.
