Course descriptionStructural Engineering Design Project 5 gives students experience of a major design project within a realistic commercial environment. Students work as part of a team to produce a feasible bridge design, subject to time and cost constraints. The project draws together analysis, design, planning and evaluation skills learnt throughout the students&© degree programme. Creative thinking, team working, detailed analysis and iterative design skills are developed during the project.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the project the student should be able to:
- understand the different stages of a design project, the importance of identifying the correct design concept, and the iterative nature of design;
- select appropriate design analysis tools for the conceptual and detailed stages of design;
- develop and evaluate different design solutions based on economic, health and safety, aesthetic, and construction considerations (subject to relevant regulatory requirements);
- plan and carry out work within a team to meet a Client&©s deadlines; and
- submit clear and accurate work through engineering reports and drawings.
Assessment Information
Coursework (100%)

There are five staged submissions during the project:
A Concept and preliminary designs (individual submission).
B Outline design report (group submission).
C Detailed design report (group submission).
D Construction drawings (group submission).
E Final submission (group submission).

An individual&©s contribution to their groups performance is determine using peer assessment and the teaching staff&©s observations during the design session.

Syllabus The Structural Engineering Design Project is based upon a national bridge design competition organised by the Steel Construction Institute. It ties together much of the teaching that has taken place during students&© degree programmes, including (for example) structural analysis, computer analysis, drawing skills, safety in design, and sustainability issues.

The course structure follows the progression of a typical design project:
- Familiarisation with the design brief.
- Conceptual design and evaluation of design options.
- Detailed design.
- Production of construction drawings and report.

Students&© work on this project is carried out in groups, and is self led. However, to help students get the most out of this project, it is run in a full-time design office environment for two weeks, and students should expect to be present for the whole of this time. Staff and guest lecturers from industry introduce the task, help students through the design process, and provide close guidance upon their work.

Briefing sessions held during the project include:
- Presentation of the design brief.
- Scheme design.
- Key issues to address.
- Detailed design.
- Design for maintenance.
