| Course description | This course is project based. It aims to develop in-depth understanding following the core courses taught in the previous semester.
The course consists of a number of projects in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, construction management and fire safety. Each student will be assigned two projects, depending on his/her degree programme.
The course is intended to be undertaken largely by personal study. It requires students to research the subject area sufficiently to enable them to critically evaluate the results of their analysis or to develop an appropriate solution for the problem, depending on the nature of the project.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to have demonstarted their
- Ability to comprehend the overall brief and the objectives
- Ability to identify an appropriate solution in terms of the brief.
- Ability to search for information related to the specific project through a wide range of appropriate sources such as libraries, internet and project specific sources such as BGS.
- Ability to assess risks relating to a site if relevant to the project.
- Ability to use relevant tools and software if appropriate to the project.
- For design projects, ability to converge on a proposed solution/design concept for an open-ended brief that has no one "best" solution.
- Ability to critically assess the solutions (numerical results or design/proposal depending on the nature of the project)
- Ability to write up the chosen solution into a succinct report, within a rigid time-scale.

There are no scheduled classes for this course apart from:
- A general briefing session on the overall requirements of the course is given at the start of Week 3 of the 2nd Semester of MEng Year 4.
- At the start of Week 4 students are briefed on their first project by the academic member of staff responsible for that project. Further consultation sessions scheduled as necessary. Project is submitted at the end of Week 6.
- At the start of Week 7 students are briefed on their first project by the academic member of staff responsible for that project. Further consultation sessions scheduled as necessary. Project is submitted at the end of Week 9.
