Course description | The aim of this course is to create awareness of the occurrence of and risks posed by contaminants in contaminated land and groundwater remediation issues for students, and to develop basic engineering skills and knowledge required to identify appropriate groundwater protection and remediation strategies for contaminated land and waste disposal activities.
The course is intended to:
- provide knowledge of the current regulatory framework governing contaminated land and groundwater;
- provide an introduction to risk assessment procedures related to contaminated land and groundwater;
- develop an understanding of site investigation and monitoring related to contaminated land and groundwater,
- develop an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for pollutant and multiphase transport;
- create awareness of general engineering practice for remediation of contaminated land and groundwater; and
- develop an understanding of remediation methods. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify aspects of the legal framework relating to contaminated land and groundwater;
- describe pollution risk assessment procedures for soils and water;
- describe site investigation and monitoring procedures for soils and water;
- explain the mechanisms by which pollutants enter and move within soils, surface water or groundwater and in air;
- follow procedures to select remediation measures related to contaminated land and groundwater. |

Lectures 2 hours per week
Tutorials 1 hour per week
Lectures 1-2
Introduction: Course outline and assessment, reading, discussion of report requirements and tutorial structure. Introduction to general issues in contaminated land and groundwater remediation.
Lectures 3-4
Contaminated fate - Basic concepts I: Characteristics and sources of contaminated land and groundwater pollution, pollutant properties, development of pollution plumes. Basic concepts and mechanisms including porous media transport, diffusion and dispersion and reactions.
Lectures 5-6
Contaminated fate - Basic concepts II: Governing equations including sources and sinks, adsorption and desorption, colloidal-facilitated transport. Mathematical models and concepts including retardation coefficients and the effect of organic matter.
Lectures 7-8
Contaminated land legislation: Policy background, regulatory framework, legal liabilities and insurance aspects of contaminated land; UK approach.
Lectures 10-11
Risk assessment for contaminated land and groundwater: Source-pathway-target framework, risk assessment and risk management definitions, hazard identification, hazard assessment.
Lectures 11-12
Site Investigation and Sampling/Analysis: Stakeholders, site description, defining risks, remediation alternatives. Sampling, Analytical Methods, Costs, detection limits.
Lectures 13-14
Site investigation and monitoring: Standard and novel field techniques to characterise the subsurface: drilling methods, direct-push tools, geophysics, rock/sediment core logging, hydraulic testing, monitoring well design and water sampling methods. Site investigation strategies, analytical methods, data interpretation and quality control.
Lectures 15-16
Contaminated land remediation methods: Ex situ concepts; chemical stabilization; vitrification; bioremediation; low temperature thermal desorption, Secure landfill/landfill types, siting, design considerations; liner materials, transport properties; ex situ bioremediation, landfarming, biodegradation and metabolism, microbial environments, biostimulation.
Lectures 17-18
Groundwater remediation methods I: Design and implementation of systems to treat both organic and inorganic contaminants. Active remediation (e.g., pump-and-treat, air sparging/bioventing, horizontal flow treatment wells, amendment injection) and Passive remediation (e.g., Permeable Reactive Barriers, funnel-and-gates, passive amendment delivery).
Lectures 19-20
Groundwater remediation methods II: Bioremediation (e.g., biosparging, bioventing, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, monitored natural attenuation) and phytoremediation. Long-term monitoring including remediation objectives and monitoring parameters.
