Course descriptionA broad introduction to the study of sedimentary processes, products, environments and facies: sediment classification, sedimentary structures, sediment transport, modern and ancient basins, mud rocks, clastic rocks, methods of investigation, petrography, diagenesis, facies and facies models, stratigraphy, the major sedimentary environments and plate tectonic settings. There will be a week's field course prior to Semester 1, and a local weekend field trip during Semester 1, as arranged. The Degree examination will include a written paper and practical work. An additional class test, assessed exercises, and field work carried out during the year will contribute to the final mark.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course is intended as a broad introduction to the study of stratigraphy, sediments and sedimentary rocks, with emphasis on the knowledge gained in recent years from field studies and laboratory experiments. Accordingly, all the main types of sediments and sedimentary rocks will be covered but there will be a strong stress on clastic sediments and related processes, especially related to fieldwork, during the course. Fieldwork is an integral part of geology and this course will develop some of the necessary skills so that students are able to carry out routine lines of enquiry when they first arrive at a new outcrop. Students will be given training in the construction and interpretation of geological maps and the course will include discussions of how information gained from experimentation e.g. with a flume tank can help explain sedimentary structures seen in the field. Optical microscopy practise will build on skills learnt in first year courses.
