Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes of the lecture series:
Students will develop a broad, integrated overview of exploration methods, the physics of waves, refraction and reflection seismics, signal processing and migration. Students will develop an understanding of the principal theories and be aware of specialised and principal techniques used in this field e.g. components of a typical land and marine survey.
The learning outcomes of the Helmsdale fieldtrip:
Students will study the structural, sedimentological and stratigraphic relationships exposed in Mesozoic strata along the NW shore of the Moray Firth with the aim of providing geological constraints on the seismic interpretation. A set of follow-up exercise focuses on the joint interpretation of seismic reflection profile and exploration well data tied into and constrained by field observations and interpretations of the succession. The aim of this exercise is to gain valuable team work experience in a professional level context to determine whether a proposed well site is prospective from a hydrocarbons perspective. |
