Course descriptionA comprehensive introduction to the physical study of the Earth, concentrating on descriptive and interpretative aspects of both pure and applied geophysics, including discussion of earthquakes and seismology, gravity, geomagnetism, the thermal state of the Earth and plate tectonics.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Physics 2A (PHYS08022) AND Meteorology: Weather and Climate (METE08002)
Co-requisites
Prohibited Combinations It is RECOMMENDED that students do NOT also take Introduction to Geophysics (EASC08008)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, you should have a comprehensive overview of the physical processes operating in the solid Earth and its core, and understand the principles of the geophysical techniques by which this information is derived.

You will have gained practical experience and understanding of geophysical survery techniques in the field and how observations can be interpreted.

You should be able to write a scientific report including reference to previous work, and understand the role played by new observations and an assessment of their errors in the process of scientific inference.
