Course descriptionThis 20 Unit course has two components:

1. Marine Techniques and Processes Course: Five days' field work at Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory at the start of summer, end of the 3rd year.

The trip is designed to provide hands-on experience with water and sediment sampling methods, and bathymetric and hydrographic survey techniques, commonly used in coastal oceanography. Water and sediment samples are subsequently analysed for a variety of parameters and, together with bathymetric and hydrographic data, are used to provide insights on the physical and biogeochemical processes occurring in Loch Etive.

Assessment for this component is based on a report due by Monday of Week 2, Semester 1. Course Organiser: Greg Cowie.

2. Synoptic practical examination
These are two 2-hour synoptic practical examinations which will call on all the information and knowledge Environmental students have gained during the final two years of their degree. There are two components:

a) a marine practical. Exam Organiser: Mary Elliot
b) a terrestrial practical. Exam Organiser: Bryne Ngwenya

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course is in two distinct parts with very different learning outcomes:

1. Marine Techniques and Processes Course: The student will critically review and consolidate their knowledge gained on this field course into a report which will demonstrate their use of the principal and specialised skills taught on this course and the successful interpretation of the data produced. Skills learnt will include water and sediment sampling methods (and the later analysis for a variety of parameters) and bathymetric and hydrographic survey techniques. This field course will provide significant insight into the work of a coastal oceanographer and will give students experience of making judgements where data/ information are limited.

2. Synoptic Practical Examination: This is also in two parts: a marine practical and a terrestrial practical. The principal outcome of this part of the course is the integration of knowledge learnt over the previous 3 years so that students demonstrate their critical understanding of the principal theories, and concepts governing both marine and terrestrial geoscience which they will apply to solve a professional level issue.
Assessment Information
Oban report (36%), Synoptic practical examination (64%). The synoptic exam has 2 papers, each 2 hours long.
