| Course description | This course consists of two related elements, namely: the Geology Final Year field Course to Cyprus plus dedicated fieldwork training and follow-up practical assessment. The field course consists of eight days of joint excursion with the Geologists, plus two days of specific physical geography excursions. This will include an assessed fieldwork project. There is also the series of lectures prior to the two-week residential trip, that will also consider the Evolution of Cyprus in its Eastern Mediterranean context.
Assessment of the Cyprus component consists of two parts: an exam paper and a collective assessment of the student's field notebooks, abstract and a presentation on an aspect of the island's geological history. In addition, the students will do an assessed practical exercise in the field concerning the physical geography of Cyprus (during one of the two dedicated field study days). |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| This course shows students how best to use primary field and lab-based methods in order to develop and test geological and geographical ideas and concepts. They will gain practise in making judgements where data/ information is limited or comes from a range of sources. Students are expected to develop their geological and geographical knowledge, skills and expertise such that they enhance their critical awareness of just how relevant hypotheses evolve and are appraised through the use of practical techniques. There will be particular emphasis on specialised and principle techniques and interpretation relevant to the Geology and Physical Geography degree. These and other skills will be assessed in the synoptic practical which will involve students critically identifying and analysing complex problems and offering professional level solutions in response. |
