Course descriptionThis module considers the significant amount of research undertaken about teaching, coaching and learning in Physical Education and Youth Sport over the last two decades. Findings about young people's learning in Physical Education and sport, and the significant factors influencing this learning, will be critically examined. The module will also review the research on the teaching and coaching process and will critically reflect on the factors that have been shown to impact upon this process. The teacher and coach education literature will also be critiqued.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On satisfactory completion of this module students will be able to:
1. evaluate the predicted impact that different teaching approaches are likely to have upon student learning, including the performance and retention of motor skills;
2. critically appraise pedagogical and content factors shown to influence developments within Physical Education and Youth Sport;
3. identify the complex interactive processes involved within the fine detail of teaching, coaching and learning;
4. critically review the major differences between novices and expert teachers and coaches;
5. appraise the impact of recent developments within teacher and coach education as they relate to Physical Education and Youth Sport.
Assessment Information
Each student will be required to produce an assignment of 4000 words. The assignment will synthesise the research findings on teaching, coaching and learning and will relate this to the professional context.
Students will then evaluate the likely impact of these findings on teacher and coach education.
