Course descriptionThis course provides the opportunity for an individual course member or group to engage in supported self-study in a specialist area not covered by another course within the MSc Management of Training and Development (MTD) Programme. The course topic must fall within the domains of study covered by the MTD Programme and is conditional on there being supervisors and assessors who have expertise in the topic area.

Only one individually negotiated study course is allowed to contribute towards any award within the programme.
Each independent study course will involve a written contract drawn up by the course member(s) in consultation with his/her/group supervisor. Supervisors will be appointed by the MTD Programme Leader, with the consent of the supervisor's Head of Department. The contract will be agreed by the supervisor and a second member of academic staff, and will be presented to the School Postgraduate Studies Committee for ratification. It will then be placed within the course member's file. A contract may be drawn up for an individual or a group. The contract will contain the following elements:

Rationale,learning outcomes and approaches to study will vary with each project. The contract must include details of the following:

Rationale : this must accord with:
- the model of professional development employed within MSc MTD and the Programme aims and objectives.
- the structure and regulations of the MSc MTD
- the course member's professional development needs

Learning Outcomes: relating to:
- knowledge and understanding
- intellectual skills
- practical / transferable / key skills (as appropriate)

These need to correspond to MSc MTD Programme outcomes.

Approaches to Study:
- how will the study be conducted and over what period?
- name and department of supervisor
- what will the pattern of supervision be?
- what are the procedures for reporting to the Programme Leader on progress,
- final result, failure to complete within time-scale?

The contract must detail the components of assessment. This should include:

- what is the assessment task (title, number of words, means of presentation)?
- by which specific criteria will the assessment task be judged?
- date of submission
- names of first and second assessor.
