Course descriptionIt seems difficult to conceive of education in other than normative terms - and it has indeed been regarded as a fundamentally moral practice. Indeed, education and teaching appear to be implicated in ethical and evaluative issues in three significant respects: (i) educational aims are themselves ethically contentious; (ii) ethical principles and considerations (of moral right and obligation) are constitutive of teaching as a professional practice; and (iii) teachers in schools are often held responsible for the moral development of their pupils. This course aims to explore some of the significant normative dimensions of education, teaching and learning in the light of past and present moral and social philosophy and theory.
