Course descriptionThis course will provide an opportunity to study the literary culture of Spain in an age when it had become the foremost power in the world. It will focus on a selection of narrative and dramatic works by major authors of the period. These works will be evaluated as literary artefacts in their own right, and also as texts that reflect the dominant values of society as well as the conflicts it sought to resolve.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Via a close textual study of key texts of the Spanish Golden Age, this option aims to foster an understanding of the ways writers engaged with contemporary society and culture to produce the first modern novel, "Don Quixote", and a national theatre that explored key moral, religious and gender issues of the early modern period.

Examination.

Presentations/essays produced for seminars, but do not count towards final assessment.
