Course descriptionThis course is ONLY for those students taking Portuguese as a named part of a Combined honours degree. The course is concerned with familiarising you with a wide variety of registers and the complex grammatical structures of European Portuguese. Teaching will be based on a booklet of course materials containing texts ranging from literary to journalistic with thematic emphasis on current events relating to Portugal and the Portuguese-Speaking world. In conjunction with the written materials which you will be expected to read and prepare in advance of each class, there will also be regular trips to the Language and Humanities Centre for listening comprehension practice. You will be introduced to summary writing, advanced comprehension, translation and composition.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Portuguese Language for Beginners (ELCH08008)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
General Outcomes. This course aims to:
Improve your ability as a linguist by making you aware of the complexity of advanced structures.
Familiarise you with Computer-aided learning.
Enhance your ability to make clear and easy-to-follow presentations using appropriate audio-visual materials.
Encourage you to perform consistently in all types of work throughout the year.
Impress upon you the importance of responding to feedback and acting upon it appropriately.
Improve your powers of self-correction.

Specific Outcomes:
To improve your confidence and accuracy of expression in spoken and written Portuguese.
To expand your vocabulary to include a wide range of idiomatic expressions.
To improve your level of accuracy when using complex structures.
To enable you to perform the basic functions of a liason interpreter from and into Portuguese.
To improve your understanding of written Portuguese through access to and close analysis of a range of written materials in a range of registers.
To enhance your understanding of 'media' Portuguese through a range of 'video comprehension' tests both on paper and on computer.
To provide you with a wider awareness of issues currently affecting Portugal.
