Course descriptionThis course looks at attempts, by authors from various periods in the Italian narrative tradition, to produce 'total' works where the implied content exceeds the material container. Topics will include framed narratives, combinatorial fictions, theories of unity and multiplicity of plot, allegoresis, and the metaphorics of the baroque and futurist movements.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To give students of Italian, whose main learning experience at honours level is monographic, the experience of a wide-ranging, comparative enquiry guided by expressly theoretical concerns. To equip students with an understanding of the architectural issues in shaping narrative with ambitions towards totality.
