Course descriptionThe student will gain a reading knowledge of Old Icelandic and a cultural and historical overview of the period.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Danish Language 2 (ELCS08008) OR Norwegian Language 2 (ELCS08011) OR Swedish Language 2 (ELCS08013)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course the student will be expected to show the ability:
- to demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding of the language and period
- to translate Old Norse competently
- to recognise and acknowledge the complexities of the subject
- to understand and competently apply relevant concepts and theories
- to construct coherent arguments demonstrating an awareness of the problems posed by the texts and issues
- to demonstrate a high level of written and oral presentation
- to discuss alternative perspectives and show an awareness of contrasting viewpoints

One 3,000 word essay worth 30% + one exam in the spring diet worth 70%
